Holiday Party Revisited
Monday, December 14th, 2009 | Beowulf, Gryffindor, Indigo | No Comments
Well, it’s done. And Indy did pretty darn well. She had about 30 minutes of barkiness, and then settled in. I think it likely helped that a few of our dog-people friends were there, plus Vasey’s humans and our dog sitter extraordinaire. So she had people she knows. And with the exception of a few drunk people, people listened to my suggestions about handling her.
Gryffin and Beowulf got a lot of love, too. Actually, Gryffin got a fair amount of Irish Cream to drink and bean dip to eat. Beowulf was wearing his yarmulke, so he was quite the ladies man. But he’s getting old, and at about 10:30pm, he stopped circulating and plopped himself down on a dog bed by the couch, which likely worked out better than he planned.
All five of us were dead to the world the next day. We went out for breakfast in the morning (well, the dogs stayed home) and that was it. I believe that the three sleepy dogs sucked the energy out of the house. Period. There was none to be found anywhere.
Actually, I’m still sleepy now…
We’re back!

Did you miss me while I was gone? Wait, don’t answer that. I don’t want to be disappointed.
While the humans were off in Cabo, the doggies were at home with their favorite sitter. I think things went smoothly, except for one hiccup.
Thursday morning around 5:30am, I got a text from the sitter. Indy went into heat early. (We actually think she may have gone into heat before we left, but I won’t bore you with that story.) Oddly enough, I was already awake, so it wasn’t an issue at all. I fumbled around with my phone and told her where to look for the diapers and pads. I’m not sure where the good denim diapers went, because when we got home, she was wearing the silly frilly ones that I never meant for her to wear again. They are too small.
So my poor baby girl was in her emotional, hormonal state while we were gone. Poor thing. Poor sitter. Our absence was probably harder on everyone because of it.
Here’s the funny part. I think Indy is on to her super fertile part of the cycle. Which means both boy dogs in our house are very interested in her. Gryffin would not leave her alone on Sunday night! He kept pouncing around and trying to mount her. The manic look did not leave his face at all. Indy had the look of “please help me” and “make him stop” for a long time. She was very happy when we finally took her upstairs (and away from Gryffin) for the night.
That’s all for now, folks!
Happy Thanksgiving!

One of the things I am most thankful for is the unconditional love from my dogs. Without it, life would not be nearly as happy as it is now.
To celebrate, Dan and I took the Swissies to the Bonfield Express 5k race and walk that starts about .75 miles from our house. I usually run it, but to get the others involved, I walked. I think between the “race” and distance to and from, the dogs got about 4 miles in this morning. Indy is almost calm now!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Thanks to the Veterans

Gryffin and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Veterans out there. Without you, we are positive things would be much different than they are now.
Alarm Clock

Why must Gryffin be an alarm clock?
I usually get up at 5:30am during the week. Sometimes I will sleep a little longer–not a lot–maybe 30 minutes. This week has been hard for me, so the sleeping later thing has happened twice. But what does the $%^@ing Swissy do? At 5:31am, he’s at the door making noise to wake us up. Seriously. No joking. I am positive his intention is to tell us we over slept by 1 minute.
Jerk.
The origin of “Swiss Lick”
Friday, September 12th, 2008 | Gryffindor | 2 Comments
I’ve been asked by quite a few people why I use the name “Swiss Lick” Swissies. So here you go…
Gryffin is a good boy, for the most part. He is not a counter surfer. He will not (usually) try to eat food on a coffee table.
One day, Dan had a big pork shoulder out on the counter. It had been injected with something yummy and had his great rub on it before it went out onto the smoker for 10 hours or so. Gryffin decided he wanted it, reached over and licked it. Then he gave us the face of “I licked it, it’s mine now, right?” Of course, we still ate the pork when it was done. One Swissy lick on a rather large piece of meat that is then smoked within an inch of it’s life is not a concern.
So, instead of counter surfing, Gryffin will periodically lick things that he wants–frosting on a birthday cake, the raw chicken in Alex’s bowl, my wine glass, Dan’s beer–instead of actually taking it.
For a while there, Dan really got into barbecue and meat smoking. While we haven’t done much at all this year (attempts to not gain 10 pounds over the summer), there was a point when we considered hitting the barbecue competition circuit. Our name would have been Swiss Lick BBQ. I think we still own the domain name. We’ve also considered making our company (CompNet) a division of Swiss Lick Enterprises.
The logo that was created for us by Ankyworks was based off this photo of Gryffin and his tongue.
Happy Friday, everyone! Go ‘Cats!
Dogs love beer

And laser pointers. But you probably knew that already.
We had intended to go to Riverwalk in Naperville last night and meet folks from the Lake Shore Swissy club. But it was gray and looked like it was going to storm. It didn’t. We usually walk around by the river a bit with anywhwere from 3-8 Swissies and sometimes a long-haired hippie freak, aka a Bernese Mountain Dog. We will get stopped about every 10 feet or so with the “what mix are they” questions. I had one guy certain that Swissies are not actually a pure bred breed, but are a cross of Rottweiler and St. Bernard. He went as far to argue about it. I do see his point, but I think we all know what type of dog we have.
After the walk, we saunter over to Quigley’s Irish pub and hang out on their porch with the dogs. Since we missed it last night, hubby and I decided to libate a bit in the house.
This is what Indy looks like when the beer can opens.
When Dan sits down, they all clamor over him to get into the glass. Dogs like Guinness.
Now, I also mentioned laser pointers. Indy is the first dog that we’ve had that seems to love them. We don’t want her to go crazy EVERY time she sees light, so we only play this once in a while. If you look very closely, you can see the green on the floor.
