Swissy Quilt!
Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 | Random Stuff | No Comments
As some of you know, the GSMD Club of America is having a National Specialty the week leading up to Memorial Day in Springfield, Illinois. I’ve tried to donate an item (or more) for either the raffle or silent auction since I’ve been a member. One year was a Paco collar, last year was a Swissy treat jar. This year, I’m donating two fabric collars and have passed on a fabulous donation from a Berner person…
It’s this gorgeous Swissy lap quilt!
Ashley Champ of South Paw Dog Designs sent it over as a sample she tried out, and it is going to the auction. She will create a custom quilt for you featuring your special dog or a breed in particular that you can use for a gift or just because.
Thanks for donating, Ashley!

(Yes, I know it’s not a dog.)
Husky Heroes!
Thursday, January 28th, 2010 | Random Stuff | No Comments
If you’re in the Chicago area and looking for something to do this weekend, head on over to the Morton Arboretum in Lisle to see the Husky Heroes!
Weekend of activities includes the “Dogsled Spectacular” featuring Siberian huskies in dogsledding and skijoring demonstrations (11 a.m.-4 p.m.). In “Meet the Huskies,” Adopt a Husky will be onsite with huskies available for adoption. (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) In “Husky Legacy,” learn about the Husky’s role in Alaskan history and see the film “The Last Great Race.” Complimentary tickets are available at the Visitor Center one hour prior to show. Shows are at noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m.
This is a human-only event…you must leave your dogs at home.
Sorry, I’ve been a slacker

I know there haven’t been many posts lately. I could say I’ve been trying to leave the posts about charity stuff up front longer. I could say I’ve been super busy. I think the truth of it is my heart hasn’t quite been in it since we lost Gryffin. But I’m working on it.
To further illustrate my slacker-ness, I’m going to post pictures from our play date two weekends ago. I can’t deprive you of cute pictures, right?
Basja and her human were in town, so we had a get together. I’m enjoying these more than normal (and I’ve always enjoyed them) because since we let Gryffin go, we’ve had to provide more exercise and mental stimulation for Indy. Gryffin did a lot of this for us in the past. So having a few dog friends over (Basja the Dane, Reggie the Saint, and Vasey the Swissy) is good in many ways.
Disclaimer: We had really crappy light. I edited these pictures best I could, but I can’t fix everything!
Here’s Vasey, checking out the scenery.
Basja prowling.
Then the games started.
And they kept going.
Basja likes to catch snow.
I had a really great airborne shot of her, but someone decided to step in front of me while I was shooting. So part of the shot is blocked. Sad.
More running around like crazy dogs.
You’ll notice that Reggie is not usually in the running around pictures.
And of course, we have to make Basja look for squirrels.
And one more shot of the pretty girl because I love her.
That’s it for now. I’ll do my best to try to be interesting this week.
Hounds for Haiti
Thursday, January 21st, 2010 | Random Stuff | No Comments
I know, I know. Another fundraising request. I seem to be full of them lately, right? And I haven’t even mentioned one of them yet…
I was poking around on another Swissy blog yesterday and found a link to another blog that looked fun. So I dug in. I noticed this neat little Hounds for Haiti logo/link on the side and I was very curious. So I did more poking around.
This blogger, Dr. V, with help from readers, friends, and likely other bloggers, has put together an auction though eBay’s Giving Works that will benefit the Red Cross for Haiti relief efforts.
I know that funds are tight for a lot of people. I am one of them. But please look at the items available and see if there is something that you just can’t live without. You never know…you might find that perfect birthday/Valentines/just because present for that special person/dog/cat in your life. Or maybe you can just buy something for yourself. It’s guilt free! You’ll be doing a good deed and helping out people in need. Hey, that rhymed!
Thanks for looking, everyone!
One of MY favorite things…
Friday, December 18th, 2009 | Random Stuff | No Comments
I usually write about the dogs. Or my experiences with the dogs. Or someone’s dogs. But today I’m going to share some of my holiday happiness.
Of course, it is dog related…
Last year, one of my other blogger friends mentioned the Dogs with Blogs (DWB) Holiday Card Exchange. I signed up for it, sent out about 30 cards and received the same. During a rather gloomy holiday season it was an extreme bright spot.
Can you believe I almost forgot to sign up for it this year?
But I didn’t.
Every day since I got home from vacation, I’ve either received a card or two in the mail from other DWB members, or I’ve received an e-card. I’m not having a problem with the “Holiday Spirit” like I was last year, but it’s still in my top three favorite things about the season. (The other two being spending time with family and friends-for real-and the random acts of kindness that I notice and wish would not be confined to Thanksgiving/Christmas/Hanukkah/etc.)
This year, I figured I’d share some of them with you. I took some of them down yesterday to make room for the new ones, and I took a few pictures.
I’ll apologize in advance about the glare that you’ll see on a few cards from my flash.
And…
And then…
Not only have I enjoyed the cards, which were prominently displayed for our Christmanukkah Kwanzadan party last weekend, but I have loved being introduced to some new dog blogs. It let’s me know I’m not the only (crazy) person out there!
Thanks for the joy, DWB people! I hope you’ve been enjoying your cards as well!
Ornament Exchange
Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 | Random Stuff | No Comments
One of the forums I belong to, Big Dogs Porch, had an ornament exchange again this year. I totally meant to post about this last week, but my brain seems to be stuck at the beach. Sadlly, my body is in Chicago where it is COLD.
So, I’ll stop babbling and show you the ornament, because it’s really cool!

Indy seems to recognize it.

But no worries, I did not let her eat it.
It’s vacation time!

It’s finally time for vacation! We’ll be gone for a little bit enjoying sun and surf. Please come back after 12/7!
Disappointment

I will admit, I’m very disappointed in the folks over at Taste of the Wild right now. I contacted them (by phone even) on Monday, hoping to get someone in marketing who was interested in making a comment about the Ethoxyquin article. I thought it would be great if one of them to comment on the blog, or better yet, write an article. Sadly, they wouldn’t even let me speak to someone on the phone. I was told to email someone instead.
Well, I did. And here we are, 48 hours later, and I’ve heard nothing back at all. No “we’ll consider it” or “sorry, we’re not interested.”
Nada. Nothing. Zero. Zilch. Zip.
I know I’m not a big deal. I have what, 7 readers now? Maybe 8? Ok, maybe a bit more than that. But to be excused and avoided like that really chaps my hide. The intent of my inquiry was to give them a chance to tell you why you should still consider their products, not to speak poorly of their brand. But in their lack of communication, I feel they’ve done that themselves.
Swissy hangin’ with celebs?
Monday, November 16th, 2009 | Random Stuff | No Comments
Not mine, of course.
Apparently, one of our Swissy friends, Bosley, is a bit on the connected side. He happens to live, along with his human, in the same building as Jillian Harris and Ed Swiderski from a recent season of the Bachelorette.
Now, I’ve not really watched the show more than once or twice, but I think Bosley was a lucky boy this past weekend. He got to attend the Fur Ball at the Drake Hotel in Chicago with Jillian and Ed. Or maybe they were the lucky ones getting to share their evening with Bosley. Yup, it’s probably the latter, but I’m partial.
The Fur Ball is an annual pet-friendly black-tie gala for PAWS Chicago. They are the city’s largest No Kill humane organization, focusing on ridding Chicago of the pet homelessness problem.
Bosley’s human was really hoping he’d behave himself, especially since he outweighs Jillian by about 20 pounds. Apparently, he was an angel. He received massages, a gourmet dinner and had his nails done. I hope his human escorts were as lucky and well-behaved.
I hope Bosley will still hang out with us now that his social standing has improved.
