The origin of “Swiss Lick”
Friday, September 12th, 2008 | Gryffindor
I’ve been asked by quite a few people why I use the name “Swiss Lick” Swissies. So here you go…
Gryffin is a good boy, for the most part. He is not a counter surfer. He will not (usually) try to eat food on a coffee table.
One day, Dan had a big pork shoulder out on the counter. It had been injected with something yummy and had his great rub on it before it went out onto the smoker for 10 hours or so. Gryffin decided he wanted it, reached over and licked it. Then he gave us the face of “I licked it, it’s mine now, right?” Of course, we still ate the pork when it was done. One Swissy lick on a rather large piece of meat that is then smoked within an inch of it’s life is not a concern.
So, instead of counter surfing, Gryffin will periodically lick things that he wants–frosting on a birthday cake, the raw chicken in Alex’s bowl, my wine glass, Dan’s beer–instead of actually taking it.
For a while there, Dan really got into barbecue and meat smoking. While we haven’t done much at all this year (attempts to not gain 10 pounds over the summer), there was a point when we considered hitting the barbecue competition circuit. Our name would have been Swiss Lick BBQ. I think we still own the domain name. We’ve also considered making our company (CompNet) a division of Swiss Lick Enterprises.
The logo that was created for us by Ankyworks was based off this photo of Gryffin and his tongue.
Happy Friday, everyone! Go ‘Cats!

did you ever enter that ribfest that they used to have (don’t know if they have it anymore) in Grants Park?…and love that Griff!…these are smart Swissys for sure!
We never entered anything. We just go eat it all. Our favorite is Rib Fest in Naperville over July 4th.
They are crazy dogs. Indy will probably be angry with me tomorrow.
