Gryffin the Swissy

Or maybe it’s Happy Blogiversary?
Either way, Indy, Ozzy and I (plus Alex, Gryffin and Beowulf) have been doing this for three whole years. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading, as I have definitely enjoyed writing.
To celebrate, we’re doing a giveaway. It’s not the same as the past two years – it will not be based on comments. I haven’t been blogging enough to do that, methinks, and I want it to be different. So, we’re doing a trivia contest! Which means one lucky person will receive some gifts from Indy and Ozzy!
I’ll bet you’re wondering what gifts Indy and Ozzy could possible give you that aren’t bio hazards, right? But never fear, I monitored their online shopping, and I think we’re good. The winner will receive a couple of things, but some are not determined yet. I will wait to see the size of the winner’s dog so they don’t end up with something bigger than their dog. Suffice it to say that those prizes will be Indy’s and Ozzy’s “favorite things”. (Ozzy is a HUGE Oprah fan…)
The one prize I know for sure is a Mountain Smith K-9 Cube, valued at $60.
It’s quite neat. It includes:
Drop down food tray
Collapsible water bowl with PEVA waterproof liner
Collapsible food bowl with cinch cord
Removable PEVA lined Food container for overnight stays
Removable interior divider
Unique top pocket access to plastic baggies
Two side mesh pockets for tennis ball carry
Soft sided Frisbee
Hmm, maybe I should keep it for myself. But the dogs really want one of YOU to get it, so I guess not.
So, on to that trivia contest thing. Here are your questions.
Why are we called “Swiss Lick” Swissies?
What particularly gross thing of Indy’s did Gryffin eat? (Yes, it made him sick.)
Who won our first anniversary giveaway? What did they win?
Who was visiting on Indy’s second birthday?
Name one thing I learned from Gryffin?
What did Beowulf receive for the Christmas of 2010?
Where did Ozzy take his “Puppy 2″ class?
What did the 2010 anniversary contest winners receive?
Name one thing I wish breeders did with puppies before they go to their new homes.
When did Indy get fixed?
Submit your answers to me via email at email@example.com. All entries must be received by 10am central time on Wednesday, September 7th. In there is a tie, the winner will be chosen at random from the group of those with the same number of correct entries. All the answers can be found in blog posts over the past 3 years.
Good luck, and thanks for reading!

Kind of scary to think about, isn’t it? I feel like 2011 just started, and we’re more than halfway through.
You know what 2012 means, right? No, it does not mean another Paula Dean Holiday Eats special magazine in the store, although I did see one on Saturday. (Really? I’m still wearing tank tops and shorts. I don’t want to think about what I’ll make for my fam’s Christmas dinner!!!)
It means another Swiss Lick fundraiser calendar!
Yup, you heard me. Another. We’re doing it again. And this time, it would be awesome if we had more pictures from the Swissy community to include. We had a bunch last year, but it was still about 30-40% pictures of Indy, Ozzy and Gryffin. We’d like to include your Swissies too.
So here’s the scoop. I can include 3-4 pictures per month, and a 12 month calendar seems to work the best. If you have something to send me, contact me here (or via my forum or Facebook) and I’ll tell you where to send them.
Oh, and the sooner you send them the better. I’ll start putting it together in mid-September.

It’s been a year since we lost Gryffin. We could be all melancholy, but he’d rather we laugh a bit – or at the very least, smile when we think of him.
Instead of the sad mumbo jumbo, I figured I’d share some of what I learned from Gryffin over the years to help get you to smile.
1. I am the most beautiful [person] in the world.
2. Absolutely everyone loves me. A lot. Why wouldn’t they? See #1 if you are unsure about this.
3. When in doubt, smile. It’s hard for anyone to be upset or sad when they see my winning smile.
4. Never underestimate the power of a well placed, room rumbling, ominous growl. I think it makes teenage boys wet themselves.
5. Playing practical jokes on unsuspecting people, dogs or cats is always a great way to provide amusement in my day.
6. If I am going to dish it out (see #5), I have to be able to take it as well.
7. It’s always better to ask forgiveness (employing #3 works) than permission.
8. Winter weight is ok. It will burn itself off when I run around the yard sniffing everything during/after the spring thaw.
9. Sharing food is just not cool.
10. Watch out for the bitch. There is no such thing as a good day for one of them.

You know, I had an idea for a funny post. I was going to make it yesterday…
Most dogs take a while to learn to catch things, like treats. It took Indy, Gryffin and Beowulf weeks of trying to figure it out. I started with Ozzy on Wednesday. I threw a treat to him 3 times and it bonked him on the nose. I laughed. I tried again with him on Thursday. He opened his mouth for the first and caught it on the second.
There goes my funny post.

Huh, I had no clue. But I’m glad – I just wish I realized earlier. I would have made a really big deal out of it.
Canine cancer is definitely on the rise. I feel like I hear of dogs with cancer more than people these days. (Not that I’d rather the people have it…) Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related deaths in pets, which really stinks.
I got an email from the Woof Report about it today. I LOVE the Woof Report, and I’m glad it’s back after an extended absence. There is always great info, and today is no different. It’s what prompted this post. The list below is something directly from their weekly newsletter.
Know the ten common signs of cancer in small animals
According the AVMA, common symptoms are the following:
1. Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow
2. Sores that do not heal
3. Weight loss
4. Loss of appetite
5. Bleeding or discharge from any body opening
6. Offensive odor
7. Difficulty eating or swallowing
8. Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina
9. Persistent lameness or stiffness
10. Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating
I’d be glad to forward it to anyone who would like to see it – it’s worth the read. If you’d like it, please leave a comment.

I can talk about human stuff, right? Don’t worry, it still has to do with dogs. Swissies even. Gryffin in particular…
So, I was going through some of my old, saved emails. Heck with spring cleaning – I’m all about the fall cleaning. I came across some saved emails I have from friends and blog readers from January. Early January to be specific. That’s when we had to let Gryffin go.
OK, I’m back.
I decided to open a couple up to read them, and guess what? I started tearing up.
For the record, it’s great when that happens at work. I fully expected that guy from the corner office to chose that moment to stop by my desk. He is a dog lover, so I suppose he might have understood. Except he’d probably wonder why I was reading emails from January in September at my desk during normal business hours. Valid question, I admit. But I digress.
I know I’ve said this before, but it is important enough to me to say again.
You are probably one of the ones that sent me an email or submitted a contact request through the site to tell me how sorry you were. And although I’ll probably never meet more than half of you, I want you to know that it still helps brush the cobwebs off my heart when I read those messages. And although I still tear up when I read them (heck, I’m tearing up now just thinking about reading them), it still makes me happy to remember just how many lives Gryffin touched, even virtually.
And just so you know, Gryffin would want you to comment on my blog posts. Frequently. And he’d want you to win a collar from 2HD. So make sure you get an entry (or 5) in by 5pm central time today!
