Packing

Saturday, September 5th, 2009 | Indigo

I decided to take advantage of the cool weather yesterday and started getting Indy trained for pack hikes. So far, the ones scheduled for the fall don’t quite work for our schedule, but I have hope something will be added.

She’s got a Ruff Wear Palisades pack, like Gryffin, although her model is slightly different. I like this pack because the saddle bags detach from the harness, and it has a handle. I got the harness on her easily. Once she sees the pack coming, she is nice and just stands there for me waiting, without any command to do so I should add. Then I put the saddle bags on. This version has 2 clips in front, on on each side, and it connects in the back with velcro and 1 clip that is on the harness.

Since the only rice I had was in a box, I got a can of Progresso soup for either side and loaded her up. I figure they are around 1-2 pounds per can, tops. So not much at all. I was intending on tacking her on my 5k training route, but she seemed a little tired, so I lopped off around .5 miles of it.

If the weather remains cool like this, we’ll add both weight and distance over the next few weeks. If it doesn’t we’ll just add weight and take short walks at night.

That’s all for now. Off to the first tailgate of the year! Go ‘Cats!

Walks in early morning or at night when the air is a bit nippy is the best. We enjoy them much better if it’s not raining either!
