Musher’s Secret

As the weather started to turn cold last year and people started throwing salt on their sidewalks, I noticed that Indy was having problems with her paws. They were very dry, starting to crack, and she was having a harder time than normal getting any traction on our kitchen floor (tile). I keep a can of Bag Balm around for any owies or the like and had been applying it probably about twice weekly, but I didn’t think it was helping, and wasn’t convinced it would help more if I applied it more frequently.
I read about Musher’s Secret on one of the boards I frequent. A lady did a fair amount of winter training with her Swissies and had been using this product for some time. I did a fair amount of research and liked what I read. It is a natural product, and would work well to protect paws from salt, chemicals, heat (think hot sidewalk), sand and ice, just to name a few. It is made from food grade waxes and is non-toxic. My only concern was the price, which seemed to be around $13 on average for a 60 g container. But I ordered it anyway. I was hoping to save Indy the embarrassment of booties.
Well, we got our container around Thanksgiving, and have been applying it to Indy’s paws (and Gryffin’s, who has not been having problems), almost every day since then. The pads on her paws look great! They are no longer cracked, have no irritation, and seem to give her a slightly better grip on the tile floor. We took a nice walk on Saturday and several areas had been covered with salt, but it did not bother her paws at all. (It did previously. People in Downers Grove can get a little salt happy with their sidewalks.)
Also important to note here–I’ve been using the product for well over a month on 2 dogs, and we have barely touched the surface. A very small amount of Musher’s Secret goes a long way. As I said previously, I had initially been a bit worried about the cost, but you end up using so little, I think that it’s a moot point.
All in all, I’d recommend this product whether you have a dog that needs protection on daily walks or jaunts into the yard, or if you have more of a working dog. It’s good year round.
And no, I am not getting compensated for this review.
