Licky Fit
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 | Gryffindor
Gryffin had his first ever real licky fit this morning. It was a bit scary. I sat on the fence about taking him into the e-Vet for about 5 minutes in case he was bloating, but there was no need.
I woke up just before 5am with a lovely retching sound, and the frenetic licking. When he saw I woke up, he was very excited and wanted to go out. I made him stop for a Gas-X strip first and felt around his belly and abdomen, then I let him out. Of course, he chewed grass for a few minutes, but he was still licky. I went outside in shorts and tank top (it’s cold here, so it was not fun) to give him another strip, then I got him back in for a bit.
I woke the DH up to get his opinion. Should I run him into the vet? His opinion (of course) is that I’m overreacting. Now Indy is crying to get out of her crate, so I let them back outside. I decided to poke around online to re-familiarize myself with bloat symptoms, brought them back in. He had no signs of discomfort other than the licking, and his abdomen was not distended. I noticed he was trying to poop in the yard, but I couldn’t tell if anything came out. My sleepy self thought it would be best if I smelled his rear, so I did. (Note to self, not a great idea.) I was positive he was able to have a successful “movement.” I still felt like he needed to release some gas, so I started putting pressure around his abdomen and pushed out one of the biggest belches I have ever heard/felt. Then the licking stopped and stomach gurgles started. I went back to sleep.
Got up an hour later and it was like nothing had ever happened.

My Swissy Koda has now had about 10 licky fits and I took her to the vet this morning because she has been vomiting lately too. The vet said she just has a sensitive stomach and sent us home with some pills to help settle her stomach. He told me to feed her chicken and white rice for 4 days… she ate her breakfast and was fine. She just ate her lunch and is now outside eating grass again and coughing. I’ve given her the pills and still to no avail… the licky fit has returned… 5th one in 2 days… If she throws up again, im going to take her back to the vet…. wish us luck!
