Dog First Aid
Thursday, December 18th, 2008 | Random Stuff
I’m looking at putting together a dog first aid course for the Swissy club. I am not teaching it, but will be organizing and attending. In the meanwhile, I’ve been looking into keeping a better stocked and marked first aid kit. Here is my running list, and I’m sure I will change it over time.
- Tweezer
- Scissors or emergency shears
- Ear syringe
- Bag Balm
- Petroleum jelly
- Rectal thermometer
- Safety pins
- Gauze sponges
- Ace-type elastic bandages
- Triangular bandage
- Band-Aids
- Roll gauze/stretch bandages (2 inch generally good)
- SAM splint
- Adhesive tape
- Exam gloves
- Non-stick dressing
- Vetwrap
- Antiseptic solution like Hibiclense or Betadine, or alcohol wipes
- Sting ease
- Styptic powder
- Buffered aspirin (I like the kid formulas)
- Benadryl (pills and spray)
- Gas-X strips
- Topical antibiotic such as Neosporin
- Pepto Bismol children’s chewables (or other anti-diarrhea medication)
- Cortisone cream
- Hydrogen peroxide
You can also consider getting some perscription meds in there, such as prednisone and penicillin, but we don’t. The ones I use frequently are benadryl, neosporin, Pepto and Gas-X. I generally leave this in an easily accessible cabinet in the kitchen, but will put the most commonly used items on the counter when we have a dog sitter.
With luck, you will never need most of these items.

Good idea. I have a dog kit too, but it is not as well stocked as yours. I better get on that!
