Beach Review

Today, I have another guest poster. David Purkey is the lucky servant to Vasey, Indy’s litter mate. He, his wife and Vasey tried out a dog-friendly beach in Indiana a couple of weeks ago, and here are his thoughts.
On June 27th we packed up the car and Vasey and went to Lake View Beach at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Lake View Beach is located about 50 miles from Chicago on the east side of the Indiana Dunes. The drive was very easy for a day trip and the exit that our GPS suggested had several fast food restaurants to chose from, so we grabbed a Subway sandwich for a beach lunch.
We read a review that Lake View Beach was pet friendly and less crowded than another pet friendly beach, Mount Baldy, which is just about 5 miles further east. I felt that part of the reason it was less crowded is that parking is limited. There is a small town called Beverly Shore that has lots of resident permit parking close to the beach. The beach area in front of the public parking was fairly crowded. I would not feel comfortable having Vasey off leash in that area.
If you look at the map, you can see where the town is relative to the beach and it gives you the feeling that the beach is private, but it is not. We went down the stairs located at the corner of Lake Front Drive and Broadway, took a right, went down about 400 feet and we were basically all by ourselves.
We would definitely go back. The beach was nice and very clean. The only down side was the first 10 yards from the water were more rocks than sand.
We took a quick drive past Mount Baldy and it did seem to be much more crowded in the parking area. The most important thing to know about Mount Baldy is that you have to climb over a very tall sand dune to get to the beach. My guess is that is where it got its name. We did not get out of the car, but it looked like you can climb over the sand or walk a little farther to a wooden path way that would take you over the dune.
