About Swissies part 2

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 | Gryffindor, Random Stuff

Back about 6 weeks ago, I started the whole “About Swissies” thing with the indication that there would be more than 1 part. Here comes part 2.

I mentioned in my previous post that Blue Swissies may have blue eyes. I have been told since then that any Swissy can have blue eyes, so now you know too!

To me, Swissies are wonderful dogs. I wish they were perfect for every household. While I know that they are sweet, sweet dogs, and any of the positives outweigh the not-positives in my mind, it’s still important for the potential Swissy family to know.

They are long to house break. Indy is over 8 months old. She knows that she should go outside, and she can hold it for a really long time. But for some reason, she has decided that she periodically needs to go in the house regardless of my opinion. It’s not fun. Gryffin also took a long time, but I don’t remember how long. I know we’re in the home stretch. I can take her away from the house for more than 5 hours and she will not go at all, so I know she’s there. The more access a Swissy has to the outside, especially while they’re young and house training, the better.

They have potential for some of the same health issues other large and giant greeds. The one I hear about most frequently (lately) is epilepsy. We have a few Swissy friends who are inconvenienced by seizures. This should not discourage you from getting a Swissy. In many cases, it can be controlled with medication and diet.

Some of the other more frequent inconveniences are Hip or Elbow Dysplaysia, Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD), Gastric Torsion/Bloat, or Splenic Torsion.

On a more amusing note, the Swissy is known for it’s big loud “Baroo.” If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, get down on all fours, pretend there’s something that you need to alert me about, and say baroooooooooo while arching your head and neck up. I will see if I can find a clip later for you to hear. I know I’ve seen them out there.

That’s it for now. I think we’ll have a part 3.
